The Domestic Abuse / Violence Ministry of Minnetonka UMC aims to . . .
· Create a strong congregational awareness and understanding of the characteristics and occurrences of domestic abuse/violence and its impact on adults and children
· Have MUMC become a safe source of support and resources for individuals experiencing domestic abuse/violence
· Have MUMC become visible and audible as a faith community that imagines No More Domestic Abuse/Violence and is committed to the realization of that vision
MONTHLY EVENTS
All events are free and open to the public.
The event for January, February, and March 2012 is “What Churches Can Do," a one hour adult education offering (it's the same session each month). We start with a short video of three compelling, true stories in which religious beliefs and/or church communities influenced victims to stay in their abusive relationship. After the video we discuss what churches can do to help and support abuse victims, and to promote a society in which abuse or violence in intimate relationships is no longer tolerated.
The material is intense. Compassionate listeners are available at each session who can provide a private space and companionship for anyone who finds it too difficult to remain in the room.
We’re conducting this session multiple times during the winter so you can choose the Wednesday evening that’s most convenient. Details are provided below.

SUPPORT for VICTIMS & ABUSERS
Pastoral Counseling: Our lead pastor, Reverend Ken Ehrman, welcomes anyone who wishes to meet with him. He can provide helpful counseling about scripture and the beliefs and commitment of the United Methodist Church in regard to domestic abuse / violence.
Confidential Listening and Help: Members of our Domestic Abuse / Violence Ministry team are available to talk with you confidentially and to assist you with finding what you need (such as shelter, counseling, and advocacy services). Just call the church office at 952-474-4114. They will give you a name and number to call.
RESOURCES
To reach out and offer assistance to both victims and abusers, we have set up a Domestic Abuse/Violence Resource Center along the window wall in our coffee area. Resources to take include informational handouts and an excellent brochure entitled “What every congregation needs to know about domestic violence.” In addition, we're building a library of books for borrowing. A short paperback called Keeping the Faith: Guidance for Christian Women Facing Abuse is available now. No sign-out is needed—just take a book and return it whenever you are finished.
Call the church office at 952-474-4114. They will give you contact information.
